Toyota RAV4. Spiral cable


Removal

Caution:

Be sure to read the precautionary notices concerning the srs airbag system before servicing it (see page rs-1).

  1. Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal

Caution:

Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

  1. Remove steering pad assembly (see page rs- 336)

  2. Place front wheels facing straight ahead

  3. Remove steering wheel assembly (see page sr-12)

  4. Remove steering column cover (lower) (see page sr-12)

  5. Remove spiral cable sub-assembly

  1. Rise the steering column cover (upper).

Notice:

When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.

  1. Detach the 4 clips and remove the column cover (upper).

  1. Detach the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.

Inspection

  1. Nspect spiral cable sub-assembly

  1. Check that there are no scratches or cracks on its connector, and/or that the cable does not have cracks, dents or chipping.

Installation

Caution:

Be sure to read the precautionary notices concerning the srs airbag system before servicing it (see page rs-1).

  1. Install spiral cable sub-assembly

  1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
  2. Set the turn signal switch to the neutral position.

Notice:

Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position, as the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

  1. Install the spiral cable.

Notice:

When replacing the spiral cable with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel.

  1. Connect the connectors to the spiral cable.

Notice:

When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.

  1. Attach the 4 clips to the column cover (upper).

  1. Install the steering column cover (upper).
  1. Install steering column cover (lower)

  1. Attach the 4 claws.
  1. Position spiral cable

  1. Slowly rotate the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it feels firm.

Notice:

do not use the airbag wire harness to turn the spiral cable.

  1. Rotate the spiral cable clockwise approximately 2.5 Turns to align the marks.

Notice:

Do not use the airbag wire harness to turn the spiral cable.

Hint:

The spiral cable will rotate approximately 2.5 Turns to the left and right from the center.

  1. Install steering wheel assembly (see page sr-21)

  2. Install steering pad assembly (see page rs- 336)

  3. Connect cable to negative battery terminal

  4. Inspect steering pad assembly (see page rs- 337)

  5. Check srs warning light

  1. Check the srs warning light (see page rs-34).
  1. Inspect steering wheel position
